Introduction

While I was sorting through some of my Grandfather's collection of photos a few months ago, I found a large number of photos and articles related to his work at the Brooklyn Union Gas company. I decided that I would scan some of the material and put together a tribute page.

My Grandfather was a man who I deeply respected. I will truely miss our long talks about genealogy and his life. He was a truely wise and compassionate man. I only hope that some day I can measure up to his legacy.

My Grandfather is on the left. The image was taken in 1942. The gentleman in the center is a former worker who had joined the Army Air Force. An article which featured this picture claims that the former worker is pointing at a bomber.

This is a photo of the exterior of my Grandfather's shop. The crane is loading a large degreaser into the shop via a window. This was also taken during the war years. It was also used in an article describing the new equipment. The markings visible at the top of the image were made by the person who did the article layout and show where the image will be cropped.

This was a dinner of gas engineers. My Grandfather is just to the left of center, on the inside of the "U". He is wearing glasses.

My Grandfather is the worker in the foreground. He is processing daily work. The work lists came in and each line item was transferred to the cards which represented each gas customer. This is one of the jobs he performed in his early years with the company. He tells stories of spending time in nearly every branch of the organization before settling into the gas meter repair shop. This is how databases were maintained before computers ...

I'm not sure what the specific reason for the gathering, but here are a bunch of the employees gathered in an auditorium (my Grandfather's vision is too poor for him to see the image enough, therefore he doesn't know what picture I'm describing). My Grandfather can be seen in the front row on the right.

This image is a bit more recent. This is a posed photo that was used to accompany an article written by my Grandfather. (I have a copy of the article and will later scan it for inclusion here.)

An unknown shop technician examining a meter part.

One of the shop machines.

An unknown shop technician operating one of the shop machines.

Another view of the machinery in use.

A different machine (I think part of the degreasing process).

Yet another machine.

Side one of another machine.

Here several stations are visible at the same time.

This may also be part of the degreasing process. Here meters prepare to go through a dipping process.

Here the meters can be seen exiting the dip.

Here is a view of one of the shop floors.

Here is my Grandfather's award for twenty-five years of service. He eventually completed 47 years of service (1923 - 1970) with the Brooklyn Union Gas Company.

This sketch shows the working of the shop. It shows some of the processes used in the shop.

This sketch shows the process in which diaphragms are manufactured.
